OK, Dads — time to expand the vocabulary to include “I don’t know” and “you’re right.”

I think we men (okay, this man) doesn’t have quite the same need for verbal appreciation that wives (okay, my wife) does. As long as we (sorry, I) know the mutual respect is there, a lot of things can remain unstated.

My husband is a lot more “emotional” than I am so he’s good with these phrases. I’m not. But “I don’t know” or “you’re right” – my father has never said those things either.

Done, Dwight. I use that a lot with my kids, usually preceded by “that’s a good question, and… the answer.”

But come to think of it, I don’t say it enough to my wife…

Can I add one more to the list?

I never heard my dad say “I don’t know”. He was a great dad, but could have been more successful as a person if he had learned this phase.
