Right on, Hank. As a prize-winning mistake-maker myself, I still struggle with replaying "failure" memories. Your take is comforting.

I found a few years ago that I needed to re-frame some memories, mostly negative, that were infecting my ability to project, with hope and vigor, into the future. I took the span of years from high school to the present day, and wrote about seminal events that continue to resonate in my memory. I found I was able to draw out some very positive elements of situations that I consistently reviewed in my mind as negative, stupid, and unprofitable.

It is exactly as the philosophers you've cited say: there is huge merit in trying something and failing miserably. There is value in having tried something difficult; the work you put into the venture is like money in the bank, yours to draw upon at will for your next challenge.

I love that Ralph Waldo Emerson quote. too many people give up after a taste of defeat, unable to swallow anymore. If they would just take a deep breath and try again, they would find so much less to complain about.

Great post!
