Clark’s Rules
This page presents Clark’s Rules in order of chronological appearance in the blog. Remember, Clark’s Rules are 1) empirically unproven, 2) based solely on the experience of Clark, and 3) may be wrong.
1. Clark’s Rule About Priorities (CRAPTM)
Do First What You Want to Do Least.
2. Clark’s WIRU Axiom
“What’s Important is Rarely Urgent.”
3. Clark’s Communication Potency Theorum (CCPT™)
The power of communication improves exponentially with proximity, either physical or psychological.
- 3.1. Clark’s Corollary to the Communication Potency Theorum (CCCPT): Talk, Don’t Type.
4. Clark’s Law of Work (CLAW)
Attractiveness is inversely proportional to compensation. The more boring the work, the better the pay. Also known as Clark’s Construct Concerning Corporate Compensation (CCCCC); see also Cunningham’s Corollary to Clark’s Construct Concerning Corporate Compensation (CCCCCCC).
5. Clark’s Option on Opportunities Theory (COOTTM)
Intuitive action creates new opportunities of unquantifiable value, but such value is likely to be greater than expected—and more importantly, unavailable without “exercising the option.”
6. Tim’s Take on The Thomas Theorum (TTTT™)
Make it real in your mind first, then real in fact.
7. Clark’s Axiom Regarding Daunting Tasks (CARD TASKS)
Abandon either the task or attachment to the result.
- 7.1 Cunningham’s Corollary to CARD TASKS: “Think Progress, Not Completion.”

I went to one of those schools where you had to eat “all” of your school lunch. We coined the phrase, “Eat the worst first.” I wonder if Clark went to my school.

So you were the guy across the table making those faces—!
Actually, no. Though I wish I’d learned the CRAP™ lesson in elementary school, it took me a lot longer…

An Individual’s Thought
In order to balance fortune and fulfillment I can’t help but ponder, “What exactly is fortune?” and most of all “How would I balance this with fulfillment?” After much consideration I have come to belief that there’s only one real way to balance the two. This is by understanding the fortune “in” fulfilling any sort of duty, promise, or action.
A person isn’t remembered for what money they had, (for those of you who see fortune in the quantity of money a person has) but for what they have done; a fulfillment of actions. I believe I can balance fortune and fulfillment in finding and realizing the fortune in my actions; from helping a random person to funding the cure for cancer. I find my fortune ever more valuable and satisfying when it is the result of my fulfillment towards what I feel may change the world (or someone else’s). For me find a balance of fortune and fulfillment would be to acquire fortune through the act of fulfillment. Some of the many ways in which I would fulfill a duty would be to raise, love and care for my daughter; in return I would receive a fortune worth more than any other, love.
I believe the world has become corrupt and has lost its sense of what fortune really is, we take our fortunes for granted; our family, friends, educations, and even our freedoms. I have realized that my fortunes have no value but that my heart an idea fabricated of the mind through influence of people that are of importance to me. To truly and fully understand what I am speaking of an example of its simplest for would be, when you have studied night after night in an attempt to pass a huge test; a final. After taking it you realize you are not too sure on the work you provided, but decide to just wait and see. Soon enough the test results come in and you see that you actually did really well and you get this worm sensation throughout your body; this is a result of your fulfillment. People have had trouble finding this balance of fortune and fulfillment because they haven’t yet to realize that by helping a friend or supporting your loved one through and through you maintain a consistent relationship with them, a balance of your fortunes (friends and family) and your fulfillment (your actions and who they affect).
