Wow. I have to go over to Amazon RIGHT NOW and add "On Liberty" to my wish list. I read bits and pieces of JSM in grad school but had forgotten how many bells he rang with me.

Linked over here from Simple Dollar, and damned glad I did! Well done!

There is an inherent disconnect between art and commerce in that art--the truly new, innovative, groundbreaking sort--by its very nature cannot be commercial, for to be commercially successful, again by definition, a work of art must have been experienced, consumed, and indeed *paid for* by the masses. Isn't it by this very process that the innovative *becomes* commercial? Perhaps this accounts for the backlash from the artistic and critical communities against art and artists who are once hailed as visionary, and who then achieve financial returns on their artistic output, to be subsequently scorned by their peers and former champions as having "sold out" or become "too commercial".
