About Soul Shelter

Many people confront the problem of wanting to do work they love but needing to do work that earns money. Often what gives us the greatest fulfillment earns the smallest income—if any—and all too frequently a job is just a job, uninspiring or worse.

Why is this so? Can things be otherwise? If not, then what changes might we make in order to devote ourselves to work that feels more meaningful—and perhaps earn our living with that work? Soul Shelter’s twice-weekly posts explore the challenge of integrating inspiration and employment, balancing fortune and fulfillment, and protecting the soul against the deadening effects of techno-culture (one of the defining struggles of our time).

Tim Clark is a successful entrepreneur, a teacher, and the author of three books, most recently The Prosperous Peasant, a collection of parables on personal success co-authored with fellow blogger Mark Cunningham, who is a novelist.

I’m thinking about sending you something I wrote a few weeks ago in response to your call for submissions to the Soul Shelter essay contest. Problem is, it lacks a certain… optimism… that seems evident in much of the material here. Are you looking for inspirational essays from those who have FOUND a balance between Fortune and Fulfillment? Or would an essay from one who’s struggling to do so be equally appropriate? Thanks!
