[...] In Praise of Salaried Employment - Tim Clark has an interesting article about the joys of not working for yourself. I’m a big fan of entrepreneurship, especially smaller ventures, so it’s interesting to read about the opposite perspective. Ultimately, I think the decision needs to be about what the lifestyle you want is, and what your values are.
You can do it, Christy. Self-knowledge is the first step, and you know what you're about.

Thanks for stopping by!

I came here thanks to the link on the Noncomformity blog (which I discovered via the Zen blog ... talk about a Web!).

As someone who really ought to be working for myself rather than for someone else, this praise of the salaried job reflects my fears ... and it is in acting and operating out of those fears that I stay in a salaried job.

My personal goal is to move out of this and into the things I "ought" to be doing instead ... i.e.: working for myself or at least in a far more entrepreneurially -minded setting.

Thank you for reminding me that it can be done, and that sacrifices are not a bad thing, and that I need to stop operating out of fear.

wow. This was a really good way to describe what happened. I know it's sooo cliched, but things do happen for a reason and life does have a way of working itself out. Having recently watched a friend struggle with work and finishing his PhD thesis, I can only imagine the quandry and benefits of going solo while finishing your studies.

Thanks, Hank, I love your epigram, especially the "Next!" part :)

"Felt" is the key. After meeting the successful applicant and taking a good, hard, retrospective view of the whole process, it's clear that this "failure" was a message for me to focus on my doctoral studies.

Focus! About which more on October 15 ...

Tim,
I truly appreciate the candor with which you describe your pursuit of what felt like the ideal job. I like the fact that you've not deviated from your fundamental pursuit of the part-time teaching job, despite a temporary setback.. One of my favorite sayings from the sales world, which also applies to the pursuit of a job is:
"Some will, some won't, so what? Next!"
